Kalamazoo Christian wins six of eight flights in capturing KVA tennis title
KALAMAZOO — Even with six seniors returning for a Kalamazoo Christian girls tennis team that finished fourth in the state last season, coach Robin Ipema had some spots to fill.
One of those was at No. 3 singles, although you would never have known it looking at the way Jessica Bouma ran through her flight at the Kalamazoo Valley Association tournament Monday.
The Comets easily took the KVA tournament and overall titles. The state’s No. 2-ranked Division 4 team won six of the eight flights and scored 54 points. Schoolcraft faced the Comets in the championship matches of six flights, with Autumn Hendricks taking the No. 4 singles title as the Eagles were second with 47 points. Battle Creek Pennfield was third (40) and Hackett Catholic Central fourth (33).
Bouma still admits to some nerves, but they didn’t show that much in the final against Schoolcraft’s Megan Scott. Leading 2-1, Bouma won the next eight games for a 10-1 victory. All the sets were shortened to 10-game pro sets on Monday after the tournament was postponed by rain on Saturday.
“I was a little nervous at the start, but it was fun,’’ Bouma said.
“At the start of the season, we did think she would be a good candidate for No. 3 singles, but I was just hoping she would pull through mentally playing on the varsity as a freshman,’’ Ipema said. “It’s a tough transition to play varsity in the first year and she’s told me she hasn’t played a lot of tournaments before high school.
“She’s stepped up and doesn’t get too rattled.’’
Bouma, the No. 1 seed at third singles, won her first match without losing a game before dropping just one game against Scott in the finals.
The freshman is just glad she didn’t get put in the double’s lineup this season.
“I really like playing singles and was glad when coach asked me to play No. 3,’’ Bouma said. “I knew we would be good this season, so I just wanted to have fun and it looks like we’re doing pretty good.’’
Ipema thinks so, too.
“I’m pretty impressed with what we have done this year,’’ Ipema said. “We put another freshman, Abby French, at No. 4 singles and she has learned so much.’’
