Galveston actress Liberato cutting teeth on serious roles
During screenings at the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston. However, the real star is Liberato, who takes on the demanding role of the 14-year-old victim. She plays high school freshman Annie, who falls for a chat-room confidante who claims to be 16.
As the online relationship progresses, "Charlie" confesses to be 20 and later says he is 25. When Charlie persuades Annie to meet him, Annie realizes her soul mate is closer to 40 years old.
Schwimmer, a board member for the Rape Foundation in Santa Monica, Calif., was inspired to direct his second film when he heard the story of a devastated family.
Liberato knew it was tough dramatic material when she landed the role.
"I think that it was definitely a step up for me from what I had previously done, but I was definitely ready for a challenge," she said.
Liberato has been acting most of her life. Her mother took her to acting classes when she was 3. "By the time I was about 7, I decided that I really wanted to take it the next level," she said. Her mother moved with her to Los Angeles for more classes and auditions. Her parents travel with her, and sometimes she is able to take her dog, Rascal, to locations.
In 2006, Liberato was on the cover of New York Times magazine for a "Hollywood Elementary" story about ambitious preteen actors going to classes and auditions.
Liberato says she is still friends with many of the kids she met when she moved to Los Angeles. "I've grown to see them as my companions. People that I am going to be working with the rest of my life," she said.
She keeps in touch with her friends mostly by texting. She has a Twitter account but uses it only for work-related updates. She does not have a Facebook page and quit her MySpace account long ago.
