A monkey is given a health exam during a vaccination and general welfare check by the Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department at a park in Hong Kong. Wild monkeys don't seem to care that Hong Kong is a concrete jungle -- they thrive so well on its fringes that the government has introduced birth control to curb a population boom.

Dapper Dan, a male peregrine falcon, keeps watch as he circles the 33rd floor of the Pacific Gas & Electric Building in San Francisco as scientists from the University of California at Santa Cruz Predatory Bird Research Group affix leg bands on three baby peregrine falcons. Each young falcon will get a band on each leg. One band is the routine U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service bird band, which contains a phone number to call in the event someone finds a peregrine. The second band is a visual identification band that can be read from a distance with binoculars.

I'm actually not a very good artist - I was going to use Photoshop to cut and paste a design from existing insignia, then print it on Shrinky Dink paper, bake it, and glue it to a kilt pin so I can hang some charms below, kind of like a faux medal. I would have no idea how to begin making one from scratch - that is a task best left to artists and sculptors! I don't think anyone is going to be offended, it's just that some, not all, of the German airship pilot insignia feature the swastika quite prominently and generally speaking, wearing swastikas even as part of a costume doesn't seem like a good idea to me. People are bound to get offended, considering the philosophy represented by the swastika, YMMV, of course. The ones I've seen without the swastikas aren't really even recognizable as German so I wouldn't worry about it if you have a pre-Nazi insignia.
