'We saw the face of God on that mountain': Hannibal-LaGrange students, faculty ...
Herald-Whig Staff Writer HANNIBAL, Mo. -- Chris Brennemann walks the halls of Hannibal-LaGrange University's Roland Fine Arts Center with an easy, confident stride that belies the broken vertebrae and pelvis she was recvovering from a year ago. Alysa Askew plays music in prolific YouTube videos as she looks forward to next year's graduation, delayed by a traumatic brain injury that left her struggling with speech. Seth Mendenhall is a year into his nursing career and enjoying his work in the pediatric unit at Hannibal Regional Hospital, but he still can't erase the memories of his own friends struggling for their lives. All three, along with 12 other HLGU students, were in a truck that slammed into a Haitian mountainside on May 16, 2010, the day before they were scheduled to conclude a mission trip to the earthquake-ravaged island. The accident changed their lives and their classmates' lives forever, kicking off a long physical, mental and emotional healing period. Yet all three find themselves grateful for the campus and community support they've received in that time -- and in a certain sense for the experience itself. "We were involved in something that the Lord had his hand on," Askew said. "There's no logical reason why we should be standing here, me or Ms. Brennemann or anyone else on the team. "We saw the face of God on that mountain." â I think I can do this' Brennemann woke up one morning and told her husband what he already knew. She was lying in a Miami hospital, four weeks into a six-week stay she largely doesn't remember, her pelvis, skull, spine and shoulder blades fractured. But she said in an interview that she called her husband's name that morning, told him the Haiti mission team had been in an accident, then added, "I'll start physical therapy soon." Brennemann, a communication arts professor at HLGU, was the driving force behind last year's Haiti mission trip and the three that preceded it. She's the faculty sponsor for Alpha Tau Beta, a women's honor society and service organization on campus that has spearheaded the ongoing Haiti mission. She's also a co-founder and officer of Blessing Hearts International, the nonprofit group on whose behalf the group traveled to Haiti.Miami Traumatic Brain Injury - News
