The Hickory Ridge Reader: Che for kids

Before and during his college years, Guevara traveled all over South America as well as other parts of the world where he observed the severe poverty and oppression people suffered when their leaders did nothing to help them. He became so obsessed with the plight of the people that he became a self-proclaimed revolutionary, willing to fight for the people’s rights wherever they might be. Guevara joined forces with Castro to fight a guerilla war against the government. Young and impulsive, Guevara quickly embraced the tenets of communism. Castro, more cagey and manipulative, called his government “socialism” for many years, hoping to maintain ties with both democratic and communistic powers. Soon, however, dependence upon the U.S.S.R. became impossible to deny and the lines were drawn between the two superpowers, Russia and the United States. “My Havana: Memories of a Cuban Boyhood” is the biography of Secundino Fernandez whose parents ran a fine restaurant in Havana. Because they did not support the revolution, when Castro came to power in 1959 the Fernandez family had to leave Havana, first to go to Spain where they had family and then to the United States. Secundina Fernandez became an acclaimed architect who lives and works in New York City, but who still longs for his beautiful Havana. To further enrich the study of the history of the island country of Cuba, read “The Poet Slave of Cuba,” a biography of Juan Francisco Manzano. In 1797 Manzano was born into the household of a wealthy slave-owner. He showed an early exceptional talent for poetry and even through the painful life of a slave, found ways to express his talent. This story, written in poetic form, illuminates the long and colorful history of Cuba.

La ruta del Che: Where Ernesto "Che" Guevara died ...

La Ruta del Che, retracing Che Guevara’s last steps.

Today I had the great pleasure of retracing the final steps of a man, who’s name is synonymous with revolution.

Ernesto “Che” Guevara, was born in Argentina, fought in Cuba, and died in Bolvia.

I visited the place where he had been held captive, and where he was executed. I visited the hospital where his body was displayed, to show the world that he was really dead. And then I visited the place where he was secretly buried for 30 years, until it was finally revealed in 1997.

And then there is the Fosa de Guerrilleros, another mass grave where twelve of Che’s guerrilla fighters were buried, including the only girl that had fought by his side.

of October, as Che Guevara was exploring the Quebrada de Yuro canyon, the Bolivian army closed in on them after receiving a tip from one of the local peasants. A firefight resulted and Che was captured.

That night, he was taken to the nearby village of La Higuera , where he was interrogated, and eventually executed, in the small mud brick schoolhouse.

His body was then flown by helicopter to the village of Vallegrande, where, on the 9 of October, his body was displayed at the Our Lord of Malta hospital to the world press. The revolutionary Ernesto Che Guevara was no more.

Later that week, a Bolivian army captain secretly buried his body, along with six of his fellow fallen comrades. For a long time, nobody would know where the body of Che Guevara had been buried.

Almost thirty years later, in 1997, an American writer working on a Che Guevara biography, interviewed the captain that had helped bury his body in 1967. The captain told him that Che’s body was buried somewhere next to the Vallegrande airstrip.

As a result, the captain went to jail for two years for revealing military secrets, until, in 1997, he was released and instructed to help the joined search of Bolivia, Argentina and Cuba, for the body of Che Guevara.

And so in 1997, his body, along with six others, was found near the airstrip of Vallegrande. His recovery later led to more searches and eventually, all of the 38 guerrillas that had been killed, were eventually recovered.
