Subnetting Made Easy with Class C
Subnet mask: 255.255.255.0
As the subnet octets are filled in the first three points they are unusable on the subnet mask, hence 255.255.255.0. Only the last octet is available.
Lets say we need at least 55 usable IP addresses.
192.168.1.0
128 64 32 16 8 4 2 1
In order to work out what the subnet needs to be we will add the above digits in order to get closest to the equivalent to 55 e.g. 1 + 2 + 4 + 8 +16 +32 = 63
The number to the left on the other number will always been one less. E.g. in this case the above sum added up to 63, and the next number along the series was 64 (to the left).
Now we have to reserve 1 space for the broadcast address, so this leaves us with 62 addresses, which is OK, as we only need 55!
Now we will draw a line between the 32 and 64. We will use the number to the left (64) to add to our next usable subnet (remember there is only 1 usable octet (=0), so we will place it in there
128 64 | 32 16 8 4 2 1
Subnet: 192.168.1.64
As the last octet was empty we have to work out its value, this is done by looking at the series of numbers again and looking on the left hand side of the line that was drawn, now add up the numbers on the left which = 192 and add it to the empty octet. So the subnet mask will be:
Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.192
There is still room for additional subnet(s) 192.168.1.64 – 192.168.1.255
To summarize the following shows all of the details I have demonstrated:
Subnet 1:
Subnet: 192.168.1.
